computerchemist - atmospheric
(New Age/Berlin School)

Swirling, layered, melodic synthesizer pieces... computerchemist puts a fresh, modern interpretation on the classic European Berlin School instrumental electronic sound. "more TD than TD."

computerchemist is the ongoing solo project of Dave Pearson, who lives in Staffordshire, England.

Over the last 25 years Dave's music has been strongly influenced by "classic" Berlin School performers such as Tangerine Dream (mostly from the '72-'86 period) and Klaus Schulze, as well as taking inspiration from newer, more contemporary musicians with a diversity ranging from The Mars Volta to Csaba Vedres.

The album "atmospheric" was released in January 2007 to critical acclaim. Drawing heavily on the Berlin School sound, but interpreting it in a distinctly modern style, within its seven tracks it takes the listener on a fresh voyage of discovery, with each piece telling a very different story through the universal medium of music.

Dave's comments about the album: "The title track "atmospheric" was inspired directly from the recordings of the Cluster-2 spacecraft, which listens to the earth's magnetic fields, translating the raw energy of particle impacts from the magnetosphere into audio making a truly ethereal sound. This research was performed by Prof. Gurnett at the University of Iowa and NASA, who has very kindly given me permission to use those sounds, which you can hear interwoven within the piece. Why did I do it? Well, when browsing cyberspace sometimes you come across something which truly moves you... and the fact that something as beautiful as the aurora could make music - literally out of thin air - it would have felt wrong to have missed it out.

I worked on the album between June and December 2006 at my studio. All of the tracks were recorded, mixed and mastered using Cubase SX3 - all instruments are virtual VSTi apart from the bass and lead guitars. All of the drumming is played through customized Yamaha MIDI drum pads or from the master keyboard and is then sequenced."

His next album, "icon one", is scheduled to be released sometime later this year in Q4/2007, on computerchemist's own label, terrainflight.

In June 2007, a two hour special show dedicated to computerchemist's music was broadcast on Tecuan Radio, an internet radio station based in Mexico City. They played a world exclusive preview of "icon one" in addition to some tracks from "atmospheric" on their electronic music show "Después del Eclipse".

Recommended if you like Berlin School, Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze.

"Now, that's what I call quality EM. If you like melodic, Tangerine Dream-influenced sound, be sure to check this one.... Atmospheric is a nice EM album that's well worth checking out" - Artemi Pugachov, Encyclopedia of Electronic Music

" Jump in the Wayback Machine, Sherman, and let’s go back to the heyday of analogue electronic music! Set the controls - no, not for the heart of the sun, Sherman - for Computerchemist’s well-programmed and enjoyably nostalgic CD, Atmospheric. Well worth a listen, and a nice addition to any mix." - John Shanahan, Hypnagogue

"Nice to hear what your up to, I always love to hear people being themselves. Lots of detail and colour. keep it flowing." - Steve Jolliffe

"If you want to fly and leave the hardships of this reality behind or search for unknown, restful worlds, this music will help you a great deal." - Csaba Vedres

Atmospheric, yeah that's right. this album is atmospheric. Listen to this album on a dark night when you can see the stars in the sky, turn out all lights, sit or lay down. Listen..Feels like flying around in space. Gives me the goosebumps. This is the best electronic/ambient album I have heard for a long time. Honestly; I just love it. - Ann-Kristin Skoog
